Studio diary: making a record at night

Most of Afterglow was written between midnight and four. Here's what that looked like.

For six months, Estúdio 13 was home from about ten at night until the trams started again.

Why nights

Lisbon at night is the record. The quiet, the orange streetlights, the last people walking home. Writing in the day felt like describing a place from the wrong side of the glass.

The gear

  • An old analogue synth with one sticky key (it's on every song)
  • A drum machine that drifts out of time
  • A borrowed upright piano, badly out of tune, which we kept that way

More soon.
